Horwaths work in goal earned the senior Defensive MVP honors at the Middleton Sports & Fitness Invitational over the weekend, as he helped the Badgers open the 2009 campaign with a pair of shutouts against Virginia Tech and Western Illinois.
A native of Woodbine, Md., he has yet to allow a goal in 200 minutes of action this season and has five saves to his credit.
Horwath has posted three-consecutive shutouts, dating back to last season, and moved into sole possession of fifth place on the Badgers' all-time shutouts list with 15 for his career.
The Big Ten award marks the third career weekly honor for Horwath, and his first since earning two accolades during his sophomore campaign in 2007.
Wisconsin (1-0-1) travels to San Diego, Calif., this weekend to take part in the Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Central Tournament. The Badgers face the University of San Diego at 9 p.m. (CST) Friday and take on host San Diego State at 2 p.m. Sunday.
