Three newcomers to the mens soccer program were recently named among the top 100 freshmen in the nation. College Soccer News released the list that included the Badgers Erik Ortega (Western Springs, Ill.), Nick Caronna (Brookfield, Wis.) and Dirk Pearson (South Barrington, Mich.) last week.
All three athletes saw minutes over the weekend at the teams season-opening Big Toe Soccer Invitational. Ortega and Caronna earned starting roles at the midfield and defense positions, respectively.
Inking his first collegiate goal, Ortega scored against Dayton, Sept. 5. In his debut game, Sept. 3 against Evansville, Ortega registered a shot on goal, but the Purple Aces keeper batted it out of the net, denying the score.
All three named to the list, along with the remaining recruiting class are expected to contribute significantly this season.
I think, as a group, they will have a great impact with this team, said head coach Jeff Rohrman. Im looking forward to some great things from them.
