This Week in Badger Men's Soccer

The University of Wisconsin men's soccer team, fresh off a pair of wins in its first weekend, returns to Madison to open its home schedule by hosting the Middleton Sports & Fitness Invitational this weekend at the McClimon Complex.

Friday's match against No. 20 Santa Clara is UW Student Night, with free admission for students who present a valid UW-Madison ID. In addition, the first 250 UW students will receive a pair of Wisconsin Soccer Thunderstix, and all fans will receive a complimentary 2008 Wisconsin men's soccer team poster courtesy of Country Kitchen, while supplies last.

THE WEEK AHEAD
Wisconsin opens its home schedule this weekend with the Middleton Sports & Fitness Invitational, as the Badgers take on No. 20 Santa Clara on Friday at the McClimon Complex. The UW, which debuts at No. 8 in the NSCAA/adidas Great Lakes Region it=763&dv=1&rg=Great_Lakes"> --> rankings this week, also entertains Dayton on Sunday.

The Badgers are off to a 2-0-0 start for the first time since the 2005 season, and the third time in staffid=350"> --> Jeff Rohrman s seven seasons as head coach.


NOTEWORTHY
The Badgers opened the season with a pair of 2-1 wins in the Dayton Flyer Classic, downing Wright State and Denver. The Badgers were named runners-up for the tournament title on the basis of goal differential, with host Dayton taking the championship.

It only took two games for junior athid=5964&deptid=122"> --> Pablo Delgado to match his point total from last season (3), as he scored a goal and added an assist against Wright State. He currently leads the Badgers in scoring, as well as shots (6).

athid=6002&deptid=122"> --> Brian Bultman s game-winning goal against Denver was the juniors second career game-winner while athid=5596&deptid=122"> --> Scott Lorenz also registered the second match-winner of his career to power the Badgers to the victory in the second overtime against Wright State.

Redshirt freshman athid=6608&deptid=122"> --> Austin Spohn notched his first career goal with a score in Sundays 2-1 victory over Denver, while true freshman athid=7223&deptid=122"> --> Colin Monasterio registered his first career point with an assist in the win over Wright State.

The Badgers bench came up big in the UWs win over Denver, with substitutes combining for five of the teams six points. Bultman and Spohn both tallied goals off the bench, while reserve athid=5598&deptid=122"> --> Kenny Dix assisted on Spohns score. The bench also accounted for half of the Badgers 14 shots and four of their seven shots-on-goal.

Three Wisconsin players found their way onto the all-tournament team for the Dayton Flyer Classic, led by goalkeeper athid=6384&deptid=122"> --> Alex Horwath . The junior logged all 196 minutes in goal for the Badgers and allowed just two goals while registering 10 saves. Delgado and junior midfielder athid=6006&deptid=122"> --> Taylor Waspi also were all-tournament selections.

Junior Scott Lorenz took a crossing pass from freshman Colin Monasterio and headed in the game-winning goal in the 106th minute as the Badgers opened the season with a 2-1, double-overtime win over Wright State. It took just 4 minutes, 58 seconds for junior Pablo Delgado to score the games first goal, but the Raiders answered with a score of their own in the 13th minute and the teams then went scoreless until Lorenz tallied the game-winner.

The Badgers picked up a pair of goals from their bench, including a game-winner from junior Brian Bultman, to finish the weekend with a 2-1 win over Denver. Freshman Austin Spohn also tallied his first career goal as the Badgers saw reserves notch five of the teams six points in the match.


SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
No. 20 Santa Clara (0-2-0)
The Broncos, ranked in the top five of every major preseason poll, were upset by Loyola (Chicago) in Saturdays season-opener and then fell to No. 25 Illinois-Chicago on Monday. After advancing to the third round of the NCAA tournament a year ago, Santa Clara returns two of its three top scorers and is favored to win the West Coast Conference

Dayton (2-0-0)
The Flyers come to Madison on the heels of taking the title in their own tournament over the weekend with a pair of wins. A team that returns nine starters, Dayton went 10-4-5 last season and has been picked to finish fifth in the Atlantic 10.
