Sophomore Brian Bultmans goal early in the first half did not prove to be enough as the Wisconsin mens soccer team fell 3-1 to Tulsa in its season opener Friday evening in the second game of the Middleton Sports and Fitness Invitational at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
The first half of the game was a strong forty-five minutes for Wisconsin, with nine shots to Tulsas two. The Badgers goal was the result of one of these many attacks.
Victor Diaz (Madrid, Spain) maneuvered the ball up the center of the field and placed it perfectly for Bultman (Tucson, Ariz.) to flick over the Tulsa goalkeeper Dominic Cervi from just inside the box.
The second half of the game proved to be more even until the 55th minute when Tulsas Hunter Christiansen scored on a fast break with the help of teammate Eric Burkholder. UW responded immediately with two attacks on the oppositions goal, but was unable to find the back of the net.
With the game tied, both teams fought for the winning goal, which was elusive until just under ten minutes left in the game when Tulsa teammates Todd Goddard and Eric Burkholder paired up to kick in two goals within one minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Horwath (Woodbine, Md.) earned his first career start and made four saves.
The Badgers will challenge Western Michigan in their final game in the Middleton Sports and Fitness Invitational on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 2:30 p.m. They will be preceded by UW-Milwaukee and Tulsa battling it out at noon at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
