Wisconsin Tops Tulsa 3-0

Sophomore Zack Lambo tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Wisconsin mens soccer team to a 3-0 win over Tulsa Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Great Western Downtown/Golden Hurricane Classic at Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium in Tulsa, Okla.

Lambo (Crystal Lake, Ill.) scored from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute, then set up another goal by redshirt freshman Eric Conklin (Rockford, Ill.) just 1:26 later. True freshman Brandon Miller (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) capped off the scoring in the 88th minute to give UW (1-1) the 3-0 victory. All three players recorded their first career collegiate goal in the game.

Senior goalkeeper Jake Settle (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) made three saves to earn his fourth career shutout. At the other end, Andy Aguilar and Dominic Cervi combined to stop nine shots for Tulsa (1-1). Wisconsin out-shot Tulsa 13-9 in the contest, including a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Lambo opened the scoring when he converted a penalty kick 31:52 into the contest. The Badgers earned the penalty after Conklin picked up the rebound from a shot by Dirk Pearson (South Barrington, Ill.), took the ball around the keeper and was tripped.

Conklin then gave UW a 2-0 advantage with a header from five yards out off of a free kick by Lambo at the 33:18 mark.

I really hoped that we could get a goal before halftime, head coach Jeff Rohrman said. I thought we had the better of play and deserved a goal. Then to come right back and score a second one really gave us a bit of a cushion before the break.

The pace of the game picked up in the second half as Tulsa sought to overcome the two-goal deficit. However, Settle helped maintain the 2-0 Wisconsin lead with three second-half saves before Miller scored from 10 yards out on a counter-attack to complete the 3-0 win.

Rohrman was satisfied with what his team showed him in the opening weekend of the season.

I was really pleased with how we played against some good teams. We learned a lot this weekend and we showed great resiliency and determination to come back after Fridays loss. We needed our deep roster today and it allowed us to dictate the game.

Following his three-point effort, Lambo was named to the Great Western Downtown Plaza/Golden Hurricane Classic All-Tournament Team along with senior defenders Aaron Hohlbein (Middleton, Wis.) and Hamid Afsari (Whitefish Bay, Wis.). The full All-Tournament Team can be found below.

The Badgers return to the state of Wisconsin to take part in the UW-Milwaukee Panther Classic Sept. 1-3 at Engelmann Field in Milwaukee. UW plays Lipscomb at 4 p.m. Friday and IPFW at noon on Sunday.
