THE WEEK AHEAD
The 32nd season in Wisconsin mens soccer history kicks off Friday as the Badgers travel to Dayton, Ohio, to take on Wright State in the opening game of the Dayton Flyers Classic. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.

Fridays game will serve as the season-opener for both teams and mark the squads first meeting since the Badgers claimed a 3-1 overtime win in 1991. That match also was played on a neutral field, in Milwaukee.

Wisconsin will start a season on the road for just the fifth time since 1990 when the Badgers and Raiders meet Friday. Its also just the second time in the last nine seasons that the UW has not begun a campaign within the confines of the McClimon Complex. The Badgers last commenced a season on the road in 2006, when they took part in the Golden Hurricane Classic in Tulsa, Okla.

Against Wright State, the Badgers seek their first win in a season-opening match since 2005, when they downed UNLV 2-1 in Madison. Wisconsin owns a 5-4-2 all-time record in season-openers contested away from home. Overall, the Badgers are 18-11-2 all-time in season-openers.

The Badgers will battle Denver on Sunday in their second game of the weekend, marking the first time the teams have met.

Wisconsin returns 16 letterwinners from last years team, which finished 6-7-6 overall and 0-3-3 in Big Ten Conference play. That includes first-team All-Big Ten selection athid=5211&deptid=122"> --> Victor Diaz , who has led the Badgers in scoring in each of his first three seasons.

LAST WEEK
Wisconsin 6, Edgewood 0 (Aug. 23) | sportid=122&storyid=14754"> --> Recap
The Badgers broke out offensively in their final exhibition match, hammering Edgewood College 6-0 on Saturday at McClimon. Five different Badgers scored in the match, including a pair of goals by junior Scott Lorenz, who also tallied an assist. Goalkeepers Alex Horwath and Ryan Vint combined for the shutout in goal.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Wright State (0-0)
The Raiders, picked to finish seventh in the Horizon League, seek to improve on an 8-13 season in 2007. Wright State took sixth in the conference last season with a 3-5 record and lost just five players from that team heading into 2008. Among the returners for the Raiders is sophomore midfielder Carl Ebers, who was named the Horizon Leagues newcomer of the year last season.

The Pioneers enter the 2008 campaign coming off a 2007 season that saw them finish10-4-4 overall and 6-1-3 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play after holding opponents to a 0.84 goals-per-game average. Denver returns four All-MPSF selections, a fact that has the Pioneers picked to replicate their conference finish of a year ago and take second in the league.
