Former Wisconsin standout Aaron Lauber assisted on an early goal against his former team as a Milwaukee select team defeated the Badgers 1-0 Monday at the Milwaukee Rampage Sports Complex. Wisconsin sophomore Eric Hanson collected four saves for the Badgers.

We started out well and controlled the ball early on, but couldnt close it out, first-year head coach Jeff Rohrman said. We had some moments where we played well, but we also showed some weaknesses. There are some things to work on this week and Im looking forward to our game against Iona on Friday night.

Due to changes in the Milwaukee Rampage season schedule, the Wisconsin mens soccer team played a Milwaukee, Wis., select team in todays exhibition contest in place of the Rampage. The Rampage, a professional A-League team, adjusted their schedule Saturday to play the MLS Kansas City Wizards in the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Consequently, two other games were moved into this weeks lineup and the Rampage face the Cincinnati Riverhawks at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night in Milwaukee.

Wisconsin had two early scoring opportunities from sophomore David Martinez and freshman C.J. Lipinski, but both shots-on-goal were deflected. Nearing the midpoint of the first half, Lauber set up teammate Jeff Richey for the goal with 21 minutes on the clock.

During the second period, the Badger defense shutdown Milwaukees attack, but Wisconsins front line remained unable to capitalize on any scoring opportunities.

The Badgers open up their regular season this weekend when they host the 13th annual Rocky Rococo-Wisconsin Soccer Classic, Friday, Aug. 30 Sunday, Sept. 1 at the McClimon Soccer Complex. On Friday, Western Michigan University will play Florida Atlantic University at 5 p.m., while the Badgers take the field at 7:30 p.m. against the Iona College Gaels. The tournament continues Sunday afternoon as Western Michigan plays Iona at 12 p.m. and the Badgers face the Florida Atlantic Owls at 2:30 p.m. A tournament awards ceremony will take place following the Wisconsin game Sunday afternoon.
