Madison, Wis. -- The Badger mens soccer team played its lone organized scrimmage prior to next Fridays regular-season opener, Saturday afternoon at McClimon Soccer Complex. In the annual intrasquad game, the members of the White team handed the Cardinal team a 4-1 defeat.
Head coach Jeff Rohrman, in his second season at the UW, saw his teams hold the other scoreless in the first half before erupting for five goals in the second half of the game. The veterans and newcomers meshed well together. We have some good athletes and really good soccer players out there, said Rohrman. That should give us the ability to adjust to changes and adversity during games this year. There is a lot of cohesiveness and chemistry on this team. The new guys have all fit right in.
The Cardinal team took a 1-0 lead on newcomer Jed Hohlbeins (Middleton, Wis.) first goal of the game 62 minutes into play. That lead didnt last long as freshmen Matt Jelacic (Brookfield, Wis.) and William Bagayoko (Baton Rouge, La.) scored the next two goals for the White team, tying and taking the lead, respectively. Junior David Martinez (Shawnee, Kan.) scored twice in the last few minutes of the game to make the final 4-1.
Not much separates our top 11 from the next four, five or six guys, said Rohrman. This is going to give us some great options, not to mention depth. We have a veteran core of returning guys that will be our leaders this year. It;s their leadership that we will depend on and that we will use to keep us on the right track.
