The University of Wisconsin mens soccer team defeated in-state competitor UW-Parkside, 3-1, in exhibition at McClimon Soccer Complex Saturday night. The game was played in three thirty minute periods in front of 270 fans. UW-Parkside is ranked 12th in the Division II preseason poll.
The first period featured strong playing from the defense and goalkeepers who kept the opening stanza scoreless. For the Rangers, Victor Perez collected all three of his saves in the first period while Wisconsin junior Jake Settle (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) made two saves in the UW net.
Wisconsin got on the board in the second frame with a goal from Reid Johnson (Mequon, Wis.) off a long kick from newcomer Andy Miller (Barrington, Ill.) in the 43rd minute. Settle collected his final save of the game to keep the Rangers trailing going into the second intermission.
The third period heated up as Parksides Joe Hnath took aim and notched a goal at 66:34. Hnath has a Wisconsin tie in his father who was a letterwinner in baseball for the Badgers. Wisconsin answered with the game-winner in the 72nd minute. Sophomore Christopher Ede (Wauwatosa, Wis.) scored a goal with an assist from Johnson. Closing out the game, captain Aaron Hohlbein (Middleton, Wis.) put the game out of reach at 87:44 finishing a ball from classmate Matthew Jelacic (Brookfield, Wis.) and newcomer Zack Lambo (Crystal Lake, Wis.).
Saturday nights game concludes the mens soccer preseason schedule. The Badgers had been slated to play the MLS Chicago Fire Reserves team, Aug. 26, but the game was cancelled. Wisconsin will open its regular season Labor Day weekend with the Big Toe Soccer Invitational. Sept. 2 will feature the Badgers vs. UNLV at 7:30 p.m. in game two of the tournament.
