Wind and rain did not thwart the Wisconsin mens soccer team in opening its exhibition season with a 4-0 victory against UW-Parkside at Camp Randall on Sunday evening.
The game, which served as UWs 2007 debut, was played at Camp Randall in order to protect the resurfaced field at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
Sophomore Pablo Delgado (Madrid, Spain) gave Wisconsin an early lead, scoring immediately in the fourth minute of the game against UW-Parkside goalkeeper Victor Perez off of a penalty kick.
Minutes later, converted senior B.J. Goodman (Lake Orion, Mich.), who made the switch to defender this season, raised the score to 2-0 with a goal on Perez.
After an eventful beginning, there was a lull until midway through the first half when UW sophomore Eric Conklin (Rockford, Ill.) gave the Badgers a three-goal lead. Junior Victor Diaz (Madrid, Spain) took a shot on Perez, who stopped the shot, but Conklin was there to tap in the rebound.
The defining moment of the second half was freshman Tyler Crawfords (Columbia, Ill.) pass from the left to senior Sho Fujita (West Bloomfield, Mich.), who beat UW-Parkside goalkeeper Jamie Lieberman with a shot to the far post from just inside the box, raising the score to 4-0.
Wisconsin goalkeepers freshman Ryan Vint (Plymouth, Minn.) and sophomore Alex Horwath (Woodbine, Md.) combined to make three saves to earn the shutout. On the other end, UW-Parksides goalkeepers Perez and Lieberman collectively succeeded in stopping six UW shots.
The Badgers will play their last preseason game at 7 P.M. on Friday, Aug. 24 against UW-Oshkosh. Admission to the match, which will be played at the McClimon Soccer Complex, is free.
