Senior mens soccer captain Aaron Hohlbein has been named a preseason third-team All-American by College Soccer News, the publication announced Thursday.
The honor is the second national award for Hohlbein (Middleton, Wis.) in his UW career. The defender was named to the College Soccer News all-freshman second team back in 2003.
Hohlbein, who returns for his second tour as captain this seasons after being named first-team All-Big Ten last year, has started 58 of Wisconsins 60 games since he became a Badger in 2003.
Only one other player from the Big Ten was featured on College Soccer News preseason All-American teams. Penn State forward Simon Omekanda earned a spot on the first team.
Two other Badgers have already earned preseason honors from College Soccer News this summer. Freshmen Ryan Vint and Taylor Waspi recently earned spots on College Soccer News Top-100 Freshmen list.
Vint, a goalkeeper from Plymouth, Minn., was named Minnesota Mr. Soccer in Class 2A last year after leading Wayzata to a state championship with a 20-1-1 record and a 0.23 goals against average. Vint finished his career at Wayzata with a 35-5-5 record and 30 shutouts.
Waspi, a midfielder from Deer Park, Ill., was a former participant in the U.S. National Team residency program. He has international experience with the U-15, U-16 and U-17 national teams and has competed with the U.S. team in Mexico, South America and Europe.
The Badgers play their final exhibition game at 7 p.m. Friday against UW-Parkside at the McClimon Soccer Complex. Admission to the game is free. Wisconsin opens the regular season the following weekend with a tournament in Tulsa, Okla.
