MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Wisconsin men's soccer team will begin the 2014 season ranked No. 21 in the country, according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire Rankings released Wednesday.

"Obviously this is a testament to both the achievements of last year’s team, as well as the talented class we have coming in this fall,” head coach John Trask said. “Beginning the season with higher expectations is something our players should relish and aim to build upon.”

The Badgers finished last season ranked No. 19 in the final NSCAA/Continental Tire Poll after the team earned its first trip to the NCAA tournament in nearly two decades. Under Trask, UW earned the fifth-most wins in a season (14) in program history, three wins over top-25 opponents and extended its home unbeaten streak to 14, the longest active streak in the country.

“As I always tell the team, rankings mean nothing once you cross the white lines and the whistle blows,” Trask said. “They must continuously prove themselves. I have no doubt that we have one of the toughest schedules in the country. It will be demanding, and like I’ve said before, it will give our players the chance to compete against some of the best competition in the country."

This season, UW will face four teams also ranked in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Rankings (No. 2 Maryland, No. 9 Georgetown, No. 10 Michigan State, No. 15 Penn State). The Badgers also have matches against George Mason, Indiana, Michigan, UW-Milwaukee, Northwestern and St. John's, who each received votes in the poll.

The Badgers begin the 2014 season with an exhibition match Aug. 17 against the University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC). UW's regular season opener is set for Aug. 29 against the University of San Francisco.

The NSCAA/Continental Tire list is compiled by the NSCAA Men's and Women's NCAA Division I All-American Committees, based on their analysis of returning All-America and All-Region players, as well as any prominent newcomers.
