A pair of University of Wisconsin mens soccer players capped off their summer seasons in style Sunday by claiming the USL Super-20 League championship.
Sophomore athid=6603&deptid=122"> --> Aaron Nichols and junior athid=6006&deptid=122"> --> Taylor Waspi were part of a 2-1 win by the Chicago Fire over the Toronto Lynx in the title match in Virginia Beach, Va. The victory completed a dominant run for the Fire through the Super-20 League postseason that saw the team go 5-0 and outscore its opponents by a margin of 17-2 on its way to the crown.
A goal off a corner kick in the 81st minute broke a 1-1 tie in favor of the Fire and secured the title.
The team Nichols and Waspi compete for is the development academy affiliate of the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer. Sundays win capped a 15-1 season for the developmental squad, which made its second-consecutive appearance in the championship match and ends the season on a 15-game win streak.
Nichols, named to the Big Ten Conference All-Freshman team last season at Wisconsin, tallied a goal for the Fire during the regular campaign.
The Super-20 League is one of six leagues that comprise the United Soccer Leagues , which sanctions youth and developmental teams in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean.
