The Wisconsin mens soccer team kicked off its spring season Sunday Feb. 27 in a four-team round robin at the McClain indoor complex. The Badgers rebounded from a 0-1 loss to the Minnesota Thunder USL team, with consecutive victories against rivals Northwestern, 2-0 and UW-Milwaukee, 2-0.
This past weekend was a great opening weekend, said head coach Jeff Rohrman. We played well in light of the fact that this composition of players has really only been together for about 10 days. I think its a good sign of things to come this spring.
Sophomore goalkeepers Mike Hood and Jake Settle split time in goal, as both are vying for the position vacated by senior tri-captain and four-year letter winner, Eric Hanson. Hood was in the net against Northwestern and Settle faced the Thunder, while they shared time against UWM.
Offensively, freshman Victor Diaz was fierce against Northwestern, scoring both goals in the 2-0 victory. Against UWM, freshman Eric Ortega and sophomore Reid Johnson notched a goal a piece for the win. In 2004, Johnson ranked third on the squad in points (10) and goals (4) behind stand-out seniors Nick Van Sicklen and Jed Hohlbein.
Up next for the Badgers is a trip to Florida over spring break March 19-24. Leisure time will be limited, however as Wisconsin plays four games in six days while in the Sunshine State. The team will face off against the University of Tampa and St. Leo University on Sunday March 20th at 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. respectively. From there, the Badgers head south Tuesday, March 22 to take on the U.S. U-17 National Team at 3:30 p.m. in Bradenton and conclude in Orlando, Wednesday March 23 against the UCF at 10:30 a.m.
After some fun in the sun, it will be all business for the Badgers, as they return home to close out the spring season in Wisconsin. On April 10, the team travels to LaCrosse, Wis., home of Badger goalkeeper Mike Hood, to seek revenge against the Minnesota Thunder at 1:00 p.m. Wisconsin plays its final spring matches on Saturday, April 16 in Milwaukee at the Marquette Round Robin and Sunday April 24 at the McClimon Soccer Complex against Badger alumni. The exact game times are still to be announced.
