Badgers Kick Off Spring Season in Own Backyard

The Wisconsin mens soccer team returns to action this Sunday, March 7, as it plays host to an indoor club round robin competition at the McClain Facility. The all-day event is free and open to the public.

We will have many of the top players in the region coming to Madison, head coach Jeff Rohrman said, and they will get to see what the University of Wisconsin is all about.

Sunday marks the first competition of the spring for the Badgers, who are coming off a successful 2003 campaign. In his second year, Rohrman led Wisconsin to an 11-10-1 record last season, including wins over in-state rivals UW-Milwaukee and Marquette.

Last year, the Badgers notched their first conference tournament victory since 1998 with a 2-0 triumph over Ohio State in the quarterfinals of the 2003 Big Ten Mens Soccer Championships.

All but three Badgers return from last years squad, including four members of the All-Big Ten Second Team.

Juniors Noah Goerlitz and Nick Van Sicklen earned the conference honor at midfield, while Eric Hanson took the accolade at goalkeeper and freshman Aaron Hohlbein was recognized as a defender.

Goerlitz, Van Sicklen and Hanson will serve as the Wisconsins tri-captains next fall.

Hohlbein was also named to the inaugural Big Ten All-Freshman Team in 2003 and recently returned from a U.S. Under-20 Mens National Team training camp in Bradenton, Fla.

Sundays competition will feature two teams of current Badgers as well as some of the top club teams from around the Midwest. The Chicago Sockers, Michigan Wolves, FC Milwaukee and two teams from the Minnesota Olympic Developmental Program are all set to compete in Madison.

Wisconsin will host a second indoor round robin competition on Sunday, March 28, that will showcase college and professional talent. Along with Wisconsin and UW-Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Wave United and the Minnesota Thunder of the A-League are scheduled to appear. The all-day event will take place in the McClain Facility, and will be free to the public.
