MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men’s soccer team settled for a scoreless draw with Western Illinois in a defensive struggle in Chicago on Friday night.

The Badgers’ defense, after putting on a strong effort against Georgetown last weekend, kept the Leathernecks off the scoreboard despite committing 16 fouls and allowing seven corner kicks.

Freshman keeper Chase Rau did his part to make sure the Leathernecks wouldn’t find the back of the net, making four saves in the 110 minutes he played, including one in each overtime period. The tie also marks Rau’s first collegiate shutout.

Since their 3-1 loss to FIU the Wisconsin defense has improved significantly, bolstered by a change in formation. After giving up 10 goals in their first four matches, the Badgers have given up a single goal the last two.

Although the Badgers outshot the Leathernecks 13-12, the first time this season they’ve out-shot their opponents, they couldn’t find a way to put the ball in the net. While four of those 13 shots were on goal, Western Illinois keeper Yves Dietrich turned away each one, finishing the game with four saves.

The Badgers will return to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 16, to take on IUPUI at 11 a.m. at Flames Field in Chicago to cap off the UIC Soccer Classic.
