The Wisconsin mens soccer team wrapped up its preseason schedule by taking on one of the nations top teams Saturday, falling 2-1 in an exhibition contest against No. 3 Akron as part of the National Soccer Festival.
The Badgers fell behind, 1-0, when Akrons Teal Bunbury found the net in the first half but nearly tallied an equalizer minutes later. The Zips carried their lead into halftime and then added a second score by Anthony Ampaipitakwong after intermission to build a 2-0 lead.
Wisconsin halved the lead in the 70th minute when freshman forward Ata Ozbay found the back of the net on a nice series for the Badgers. Sophomore Mark Roos served a ball that was flicked by senior Scott Lorenz to a sliding Ozbay at the back post for the score.
Statistics for the match were not available.
The loss followed a win for the Badgers in their other preseason match, a 1-0 triumph over UW-Parkside last Monday.
Wisconsin opens the season Friday by hosting Virginia Tech as part of the Middleton Sports & Fitness Invitational at the McClimon Complex. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. following a match between UW-Milwaukee and Western Illinois.
