MADISON, Wis. –- After an incredibly successful run for former Badger rowers at last week’s World Cup III in Switzerland, a trio of Wisconsin’s best young rowers were named to the 2013 U.S. Under 23 National Team on Wednesday.
All three will compete at the 2013 World Rowing Under 23 Championships set for July 24-28 in Linz, Austria.
In the women’s eight, Kendall Schmidt (Greenfield, Wis.) will direct UW junior-to-be Anne Rauschert (Bushnell, Ill.) in the women’s eight.
Schmidt, Wisconsin’s Big Ten Medal of Honor winner and the 2013 First-Team All-Big Ten coxswain, has coxed the Badgers’ varsity eight since her sophomore season. During that time she has made three NCAA appearances in that role. This year’s appearance marks the second for Schmidt on the U.S. under-23 team as she coxed the 2012 women’s eight to gold at the 2012 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Trakai, Lithuania.
Rauschert makes her first international rowing appearance after rowing in UW’s second varsity eight this past season. She helped her boat to a 16th-place finish at the NCAA championships and a second-place finish at the Big Ten championships.
On the men’s side, senior-to-be Michael Lindberg (Milwaukee) will row in the lightweight men’s four.
Lindberg rowed in Wisconsin’s second varsity eight at the 2013 Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships and Eastern Sprints, helping the boat place ninth at IRAs and fifth at the conference championships.
Additionally, former Badger rower and 2008 Olympian Matt Smith will serve as one of the coaches for the team.
