Badger men's rowing duo earn under 23 national team berth

MADISON, Wis. – Rowing as representatives of USRowing Development Camp – University of Wisconsin, the duo of Andrew Gallagher and Erich Hanxleden won the men’s double sculls at the 2010 Under 23 World Championships Trials and earned the opportunity to compete at the 2010 World Rowing Under 23 Championships, July 22-25 in Brest, Belarus. The trials took place on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. last week.

The duo were one of four boats with Wisconsin rowers to make finals of the trials.

Gallagher and Hanxleden clocked a 6:57.665, nearly 15 seconds ahead of the second-place crew of Alex Burjakowsky and Nick Trojan from Newport Aquatic Central/Long Beach Rowing Association. The second-place crew crossed the 2000-meter mark in 7:02.107.

Gallagher, a Phoenix native, rowed in Wisconsin’s second varsity eight during the 2010 season and will enter his senior season. Hanxleden, a Garden Grove, Calif., native, transfered to Wisconsin after two years at Orange Coast College, but didn't row for the Badgers in competition during the 2009-10 campaign.

In the women’s lightweight single sculls, USRowing Development Camp – University of Wisconsin’s Helen Beckner crossed third in 8:23.841. Durham Boat Club’s Emily Boucher won the final in 7:57.691 to secure her spot on the team. Beckner, who rowed in UW’s Eastern Sprints champion novice eight as the bow seat, will be a sophomore for Wisconsin next season.

In the men’s four with coxswain, a boat made up of coxswain Michael Patinkin, Luke Juckett, Sam Hoidal, Tim Aghai and Daniel Gengler and representing USRowing Development Camp – University of Wisconsin, placed third in 6:22.809. A boat from Penn A.C. Rowing Association won the race in 6:13.749 to earn a trip to the under 23 world championships. The boat edged USRowing Development Camp – University of Washington by just 1.24 seconds.

Jucket, Hoidal, Aghai and Gengler were all part of UW’s varsity eight last season, while Patinkin coxed UW’s varsity four to bronze at the 2010 IRA National Championships and an Eastern Sprints title in the third varsity eight. All five return to the Badgers for next season as juniors.

Finally in the women’s pair, USRowing U23 Selection Camp’s Felice Mueller and Ashley Kroll won the final over USRowing Development Camp – University of Wisconsin’s Briana Pittman and Katie Hurtis. Mueller and Kroll clocked a 7:05.029 for the win, bettering the UW duo’s second-place time of 7:41.119. Pittman, a senior in the upcoming season, and Hurtis, a senior last season, rowed as part of Wisconsin’s varsity eight in 2009-10.
