MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men's rowing team closed out the regular season with a five-race sweep over Penn and Drexel on the Schuylkill River Saturday in a tune-up for the IRA National Championship.
Two weeks after a grueling EARC conference championship, Wisconsin's race in Philadelphia was a chance to get the crew in race shape for next weekend's national championship races. The Badgers raced four of their six boats that will compete for a national title.
"After a two week break, it's good to be back in race mode," head coach Chris Clark said. "Penn is a rising program and each of the last three years we've raced here they've gotten better and better, so we are just happy to be able to stay ahead."

In the varsity eight race, No. 6 Wisconsin edged No. 14 Penn by 3.4 seconds, finishing in 5:48.1. The Badgers and Quakers both had strong starts and quickly pulled away from Drexel. After holding a lead of only a few seats for the first half of the race, UW pulled ahead in the second half, and won by a boat length.
The second varsity eight race was not as close, as Wisconsin pulled away for a 14-second win over Penn, finishing the 2,000 meter course in 5:58.8. Drexel finished nearly 28 seconds behind the Badgers.
Wisconsin's margin of victory in the open weight four was even more impressive, as the Badgers finished in 6:32.0, over 28 seconds ahead of Penn. The Quakers narrowly beat out Drexel for a 4.3-second edge for second place.
The freshman eight race was another close affair, but once again Wisconsin came away with a win, finishing in 5:54.9. After staying even with Penn early in the race, the Badgers began to pull away for a 6.5-second victory. Drexel finished third, 8.3 seconds behind Penn.
In the final race of the day, Wisconsin ensured a sweep with a 29-second win over two Penn crews in the varsity pairs race. The Badgers finished in 7:29.2, while Penn's first boat finished in 7:58.2, followed by Penn's second boat in 8:42.2
The Badgers will stay in the Philadelphia area as they prepare for the IRA National Championship in Cherry Hill, N.J. The national championship races will be held May 31-June 2 on the Cooper River.
"Now we look to our championships next week," Clark said. "We are close to some real speed but we are not there yet. Sometimes it happens during the final week, sometimes it doesn't; we'll just have to see."
