BARABOO, Wis. -- Temperatures in the low 40s and rain couldn't stop the Wisconsin men's rowing team from capturing both the Cochrane and Jablonic cups for the seventh-straight year Saturday at Devils Lake State Park in Baraboo, Wis.

Weather forced the Badgers to move their home race to Devils Lake, where, despite the rain and cold, a beautiful setting and flat water greeted them. Wisconsin put up an undefeated performance, winning all six races against No. 15 Dartmouth and No. 13 Boston University.

 Fast Facts
• No. 7 Wisconsin won the Jablonic and Cochrane cups for the seventh-straight season.
• After beating Boston University by just .3 seconds last season, the Badgers defeated the Terriers by .6 seconds this year.

Wisconsin's varsity eight got the day off to a good start with a four-second win over Dartmouth. After the Big Green got out to quick start, the Badgers took the lead with about 800 meters remaining. The Badgers crossed the finish line in 5:49.2

"Dartmouth was very aggressive at the start," said head coach Chris Clark. "We rowed long and very composed in the final stretch and were able to reel them back in and take control with about 800 meters to go."

With the victory over Dartmouth, the Badgers retained ownership of the Cochrane Cup, awarded to the winning varsity eight crew between Wisconsin, Dartmouth and MIT. First awarded in 1961, the cup is named after former MIT president and director of the Navy's Bureau of Ships Admiral Edward L. Cochrane. The Badgers have won the cup for the last seven years and 34 times total.

In its afternoon race, Wisconsin's varsity eight edged Boston University in a photo-finish for a second-straight season. After beating the Terriers by just .3 seconds last year, the Badgers won by .6 seconds Saturday. BU took an early lead after 250 meters, but UW came back about halfway through and held a small lead for the rest of the race to finish in 5:42.7.

"Boston is a great team and raced a great race," Clark said. "We could have folded at the end, but we were able to hold them off."

Wisconsin and Boston University raced for the Jablonic Cup. Awarded since 1989 and named after former Wisconsin head coach Randy Jablonic, Wisconsin has also claimed the cup seven-straight years and 20 times since 1989.

"We have been lucky enough to have won both the Cochrane and Jablonic cups a lot in recent years," Clark said. "All streaks will end, but we are happy it won't be this year and we have a good thing going there."

In the second varsity eight, Wisconsin defeated Dartmouth by nearly 16 seconds, finishing in 5:59.9. In the afternoon race, the Badgers got out to an early lead and beat Boston University in a close race, crossing the finish line in 5:51.1, 3.4 seconds ahead of the Terriers.

The freshmen were particularly impressive, defeating three tough crews in Dartmouth, MIT and Boston. In the morning race, the Badgers won by just 1.1 seconds over Dartmouth and more than 21 seconds ahead of MIT, finishing in 6:03.9

In the afternoon race, Wisconsin beat Boston by 1.8 seconds, finishing in 5:52.3. It was a back-and-forth battle between the two crews before the Badgers took a lead with 700 meters remaining. BU prevented UW from extending its lead to more than half a boat.

"Boston made a push at the end, but we were able to hold them off," Clark said. "It was really a great battle, and the freshmen were really impressive today."

Wisconsin's fourth varsity and second and third freshman eights raced each other, with the second freshman eight coming away with the victory by .6 seconds. UW's fourth varsity eight finished second, in 6:15, while the third freshman eight finished in 6:40.2

"Devils Lake State Park was impressive, and thanks to the DNR for letting us use the lake," Clark said. "It really was an amazing place to hold the race."

Wisconsin has next weekend off before traveling to Worcester, Mass., for the EARC Conference Championships. The Badgers will look to improve on a third-place finish in the varsity eight last year, while defending titles in the third varsity eight and second freshman eight.
