MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin women's swimmer Ivy Martin and men's hockey player Ryan Little have been named UW Student-Athletes of the Month for December.

Each month, the UW Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) selects its "Student-Athletes of the Month." These student-athletes are nominated by their coaches and academic advisors based on the following criteria:

The student-athletes must:
• Be academically eligible and in good academic standing
• Have obtained an outstanding achievement or recognition in academics
• Make a significant contribution to their respective team
• Be actively engaged in community service

SAAC members then vote on the winners at the first SAAC meeting of each month. The goal is to have each sport represented throughout the year. At the end of the year, all of the "Student-Athletes of the Month" become the nominations for the male and female Student-Athlete of the Year awards, which is awarded at the Buckinghams.

Martin is a sophomore from Madison, Wis., who started out the season with the nation's fastest time in the 50 free. Martin has also achieved five NCAA qualifying cuts so far this season.

The 2012 NCAA all-america honorable mention winner participated in the Red and White Hunger Fight and has volunteered for the Madison Ironman. The sophomore earned her first Big Ten weekly honor in early October, garnering the Big Ten women's Co-Swimmer of the Week award on Oct. 16.

Little is currently tied for second with two goals this season. The forward from Fond du Lac, Wis., is a three-time Academic All-WCHA honoree, two-time Academic All-Big Ten winner and recipient of team's Ivan B. Williamson Academic Award. He was named a UW Athletic Board Scholar in 2010-11.

The senior is a member of Wisconsin's Student Athlete Advisory Committee and has participated in the Red and White Hunger Fight and Toys for Tots with SAAC.  He makes visits to the UW Children's Hospital with the team and has volunteered at the Crazy Legs Classic.
