Sept. 4, 2014MADISON, Wis. –-
A pair of Wisconsin natives will officially lead the Badger men’s hockey program into the 2014-15 season, announced head coach Mike Eaves
Waupaca native Brad Navin
, a forward, and Mosinee native Chase Drake
, a defenseman, will share the duties as co-captains for the upcoming season. Both are seniors for the squad, while Drake is a fifth-year because of a red-shirt season when he was a freshman.
Joining the co-captains in the official leadership group is senior forward Joseph LaBate
, who hails from Eagan, Minnesota.
“The team voted this past Monday,” Eaves remarked. “Usually we have the voting at the end of our season, but because we are such a young team with 11 freshmen, we waited until they all had some time together to get to know each other.
“It was quite clear that the two guys who are our co-captains were the picks. The voting was very close and Joseph was a strong third, so it became evident how the guys felt about their leadership.”
This season marks the first time since 2008-09 that Wisconsin will go with co-captains. Ben Street and Blake Geoffrion shared the duties that season. Street and Geoffrion, along with Ryan McDonagh, served as tri-captains during the 2009-10 campaign. It marks the 18th time in UW history that the team has gone with more than one captain.
Wisconsin officially opens practice on Saturday, Oct. 4, with their Red-White Scrimmage at Cornerstone Community Center in Ashwaubenon.
UW plays its first games on Oct. 10-11 against Alaska and Alaska Anchorage at the Kendall Hockey Classic in Anchorage, Alaska, at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. CT, respectively.
