MADISON, Wis. – Defenseman Brendan Smith, who completed his junior season with the Wisconsin men’s hockey program this past season, has signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings. Smith was drafted in the first round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft as the 27th overall pick.
A Mimico, Ontario native, Smith led the nation’s defensemen with 15 goals and 52 points this past season, and helped the Badgers reach the 2010 NCAA Championship Game. A First-Team All-American and top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, Smith finishes his career with 87 points in 95 games played. He was also named the 2010 WCHA Defensive Player of the Year, a First-Team All-WCHA pick and a member of the 2010 NCAA Frozen Four All-Tournament Team after tying the NCAA record for NCAA single-game assists with five in the semifinals against RIT.
