MADISON, Wis. –- When Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez handed off a golden shovel to lead donor Chuck La Bahn during Wednesday’s La Bahn Arena groundbreaking ceremony, the culmination of dedicated efforts by Wisconsin staff, alumni and friends of the program came to fruition.

Construction began on La Bahn Arena over a month ago, but for many, this morning’s ceremony marked the first time they got a look at the future home and practice rink for the women’s hockey program. The arena will also serve as a practice rink for the men’s program, while the men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs will benefit with new locker rooms.

The theme of the morning was “thanks.” Alvarez said it. Women’s hockey head coach Mark Johnson said it. So did men’s hockey head coach Mike Eaves and 2011 Patti Kazmaier Award-winner Meghan Duggan. The thanks went to Chuck and Mary Ann La Bahn and many others whose financial contributions were instrumental in getting the first shovel in the ground.

Attendees included various Badger coaches, including many from sports not directly benefiting from the new facility. In addition, Badger staff and administrators enjoyed the celebration, while hockey alumni like Steve Alley, Sharon Cole and Kirk Daubenspeck took in the festivities.

The ceremony wrapped with a construction tradition as a pair of beams that will be included in the hockey and swimming facility’s framework invited the signatures of all the attending donors to the project.
