DETROIT -- Senior forward Blake Geoffrion was named the 2010 Hobey Baker Memorial Award recipient, the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation announced on Friday at the NCAA Frozen Four in Detroit and live on ESPNU. Geoffrion is Wisconsin's first-ever Hobey Baker award winner.

Geoffrion edged out Bobby Butler, a senior forward from the University of New Hampshire, and Gustav Nyquist, a sophomore forward from the University of Maine, to earn this year's award. The trio made up the 2010 "Hobey Hat Trick" finalists.

Wisconsin has had 10 top-10 finalists, but Geoffrion is the first Badger to take home college hockey's top individual honor. Junior defenseman Brendan Smith joined Geoffrion in the top-10 finalists this season, marking the first time UW has had two Hobey finalists in the same season.

Geoffrion, a tri-captain, is one of college hockey's most complete players. He is the Badgers' top faceoff man (58.2 percent), the team's top penalty-killing forward, UW's leader and the nation's second-leading goal scorer (28), as well as the nation's top power-play goal scorer (15).

The Brentwood, Tenn., native has been at his best when it matters the most this season. In seven postseason games, Geoffrion has seven goals and 13 points. He also has two game-winning goals, three power-play goals and a first goal. Geoffrion leads the Badgers with 32 shots and is 59.7 percent on faceoffs (119-80) during the WCHA and NCAA tournaments. He was named the NCAA West Regional Most Outstanding Player and a member of the WCHA Final Five All-Tournament Team. The tri-captain also took home the INCH's National Player of the Year laurel.

Geoffrion looks to lead the Badgers to their seventh NCAA title when Wisconsin (28-10-4) takes on Boston College (28-10-3) in the national championship game on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT. The game will air live on ESPN.

The Hobey Baker Memorial Award was first awarded in 1981 to recognize college hockey's premier player. Ten players are selected each year as finalists for the award, which is then cut to the "Hobey Hat Trick," of three finalists.

The award was given out at the same site that Geoffrion will battle for the national title at Ford Field in Detroit. Upon receiving the honor, Geoffrion thanked his family, teammates and coaches for their contributions to his successes on and off the ice.

Criteria for the award include strength of character on and off the ice, displaying outstanding skills in all phases of the game, sportsmanship and scholastic achievements.
