Mersch named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week

MADISON, Wis. – University of Wisconsin right winger Michael Mersch, who led all league players with six scoring points as the visiting Badgers swept conference-rival Nebraska Omaha last weekend, been named Red Baron® WCHA Men’s Offensive Player of the Week for March 5.  

A 6-1, 215-pound junior from Park Ridge, Ill., Mersch scored three goals, including his 20th of the season, and six points to lead Wisconsin to a 4-3 and 6-2 road sweep over No. 13/15 Nebraska Omaha. He scored his 18th goal and added an assist in UW’s 4-3 victory last Friday (March 1), led the club with four shots and was +1. Then Saturday (March 2), Mersch recorded the first four-point game of his career with two goals and two assists to lead the Badgers to a season-high six goals and earn No. 1 Star of the Game honors. He scored the game-winning goal at 12:00 of the second period, scored his 20th goal just :41 seconds into the third, had two assists, four shots on goal and was +1.

Mersch, one of five skaters in the nation with 20 goals, leads the Badgers with 32 points in 34 games. A draftee of Los Angeles (NHL), Mersch has a five-game point-scoring streak (4g, 5a) and has scored nearly 23.5% of the Badgers’ goals this season, the second-highest percentage for any player in the nation.
