MADISON, Wis. -- Senior forward Michael Mersch (Park Ridge, Ill.) posted one of the most productive weekends of his career last weekend against Michigan and was recognized by the Big Ten Conference for his effort as the First Star of the Week.
Mersch, who was the Big Ten Second Star of the Week on Dec. 17, scored his first career hat trick and added an assist for a four-point night last Friday in UW's 5-2 victory over the Wolverines. Mersch scored the game's first goal, then two goals in a 38-second span of the third period to seal the Badger win. His first career hat trick marked the first Badger hat trick since Justin Schultz on Nov. 27, 2010, against Michigan State. The hat trick also helped Mersch record his second-career four-point game.
Mersch added the primary assist on Saturday's game-winning goal by Chase Drake in a 3-1 victory.
The Los Angeles Kings' draft pick leads the Big Ten with 14 goals and shares second with 24 points.
The Badgers are off this week, but return to the Kohl Center for a Friday-Saturday series on Jan. 24-25 against Ohio State.
Ohio State forward Ryan Dzingel was this week's second star, while Minnesota goaltender Adam Wilcox earned third star of the week honors.
