MADISON, Wis. -– Junior forwards Michael Mersch (Park Ridge, Ill.) and Mark Zengerle (Rochester, N.Y.) are among 77 skaters across college hockey nominated for this year’s Hobey Baker Memorial Award fan vote.

Awarded annually to college hockey’s top player, the Hobey Baker’s highly popular fan-voting phase is now open. Fans can cast their vote, here.

This first phase of fan balloting will run now through March 10, 2013. Phase two of fan balloting will begin on March 22 from the list of Top Ten Hobey Baker finalists. The fans’ vote accounts for a full 1 percent of the total ballot in each phase in selecting this year’s award recipient.

Mersch leads the Badgers in scoring with 17 points in 18 games, including a team-high 12 goals. Mersch shares second in the nation with his goal total, one behind the national leader. His 0.67 goals-per-game scoring average shares third in the country and leads the WCHA. He has nine goals in WCHA play, one shy of the league leaders.

Zengerle boasts 10 points in 12 games played. The nation’s leading returning scorer from last season, Zengerle missed six games earlier this season due to an injured hand. Prior to the injury, the right-handed shot had points in each of Wisconsin’s first five games of the season. He was injured in the team’s sixth contest.

Wisconsin has had at least one of the top-10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award in each of the last four seasons, including 2010 winner Blake Geoffrion and two-time finalist Justin Schultz.

Award criteria include candidates emulating the exceptional character traits exhibited by the award’s namesake, Hobey Baker. An American super-hero, Baker was a World War I fighter pilot and was known as America’s greatest amateur athlete in his day, excelling at hockey and football while starring for Princeton. Award candidates must demonstrate strength of character both on and off the ice, contribute to the integrity of his team and display outstanding skills in all phases of the game. Consideration should be given to scholastic achievement and sportsmanship.
