McCabe named Big Ten Third Star of the Week

Jan. 8, 2014

MADISON, Wis. -- Junior defenseman Jake McCabe (Eau Claire, Wis.) became the seventh different Wisconsin men’s hockey player to skate away from a weekend as one of the Big Ten’s Three Stars of the Week after his performance last weekend against Alaska Anchorage.

The third star of the week, McCabe scored two goals and added an assist on Saturday to power the Badgers to a 4-3 victory and series split at the Kohl Center against the Seawolves. His first goal was of the highlight-reel variety, faking out a defender at the blue line, cutting to the net, then going backhand to finish and tie the game at 1-1. After earning the lone assist on UW’s second goal, the Buffalo Sabres’ 2012 second-round pick broke a 3-3 tie in the third period with his first game-winning goal of the season and the third of his career.

McCabe, a 2013 Third-Team All-WCHA pick, leads Big Ten defensemen with 15 points and a 0.83 points-per-game scoring average in 18 games played.

McCabe and the Badgers return to Big Ten play this weekend when No. 8/9 Michigan visits for a Friday-Saturday series at 8 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively. Friday’s game airs on BTN, while Saturday’s game airs on Fox Sports Wisconsin alternate.
