MADISON, Wis. –- Team USA and captain Jake McCabe (Eau Claire, Wis.) posted their second consecutive blowout victory at the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship on Wednesday morning, this time a 7-0 win over Czech Republic in the quarterfinals, to earn an early Thursday morning date with Canada. The winner advances to the gold medal match on Saturday, while the loser will play for bronze in Ufa, Russia.
McCabe contributed on the scoresheet for the second-straight game for Team USA, as his power-play point shot hit off a teammate and deflected to John Gaudreau. Gaudreau finished at 28 seconds of the second period to give the U.S. a 2-0 lead. McCabe has a goal and two assists through five games of the tournament.
Now the Americans face Canada, a team that defeated them, 2-1, during group play. The rematch is set for a 3 a.m. CT start on Thursday morning. The game airs live on NHL Network and on NHL.com.
The victor will play for gold against the winner of the other semifinal contest between Sweden and Russia, while the losers meet for the bronze. Those games are scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 5, with the bronze medal contest at 3 a.m. CT and the gold medal match at 7 a.m. CT.
