Kohl Center - Madison, Wis.

Head Coach Mike Eaves

On seeing tonight as a lost opportunity of sorts given crowd, atmosphere:
“We played better tonight than we did last night. We told our guys they did a good job in many areas. We just ran into a hot goaltender and that happens in this sport. They need to walk out of this building with their heads up and knowing how well they played. It’s just part of athletics. Yeah, lose an opportunity in front of a packed house, absolutely agreed. But that’s the great thing about playing athletics: there are no guarantees. And that’s life. So tonight we have to deal with it and get ready to come back on Monday and go to work and head to Michigan. We played really good. I’ve got no qualms at all other than we didn’t find another way to get the puck in the net.”

On team appreciating successful home stand despite loss tonight:
“They’re very frustrated and disappointed. That’s the one thing about being a competitive athlete. They don’t want to hear the words we were saying as a coaching staff. But it is the truth and we hope that at some point before they leave they recognize how well they played and they hold their heads up when they walk out of this building and get ready to come back next week.”

On special teams tonight:
“Penalty killing was excellent. Power play created more chances than we did last night. Although we created several last night. That little touch of finishing wasn’t there for us. So that was a challenge all night, whether that was us with our sights being off or that the young goalie made some big saves. It’s probably a combination of those two. But I would say, other than putting the puck in the net, we played at a high level.”

On Rumpel’s play in net tonight:
“[He played] well. He wasn’t tested a lot, but there were some tricky saves that he made, using his big body and using that butterfly to kick out the puck. And then our defenseman were there to clear rebounds. We didn’t give up a lot. He was there when we needed him and our defenseman did a good job of clearing pucks for second shots.”

Wisconsin Players

Forward Mark Zengerle

On atmosphere at the Kohl Center tonight:
“It was fun. That’s what you want as a hockey player and that’s part of the luxury of playing at Wisconsin. You get that sort of thing. I think everyone in that locker room is bummed that we didn’t get the win for that crowd. And that’s something we talked about. Hopefully we have another opportunity when we play Minnesota in a few weeks to do that.”

On what’s going to keep him up at night thinking about this game:
“We progressed. My post, there were so many other chances. Give kudos to the goalie, but at the same time we made some really nice plays. Barney (Tyler Barnes) had one right there at the end. (Michael) Mersch had a few opportunities. The chances were there. It’s not one of those games where you kind of lost the game without having an opportunities. They were all over the place and that’s part of sports. You don’t always get all of the bounces.”

Forward Sean Little

On viewing tonight as an opportunity lost:
“You can kind of view it in both ways. I feel like we had a good effort as a team. We just couldn’t find a way to put the puck in the net. Overall I thought we played alright, so I don’t think it was a loss. I think we got better as a team tonight and that’s all we can ask for.”

On Ohio State responding to Wisconsin’s pressure all night similar to that of a boxing match:
“I thought we played really well in the third. We dominated play for the most part. Give them credit. They had a pretty gutsy effort. They got pucks out when they needed to. And like Mark said, we had a lot of grade-A opportunities, we just couldn’t find the back of the net.”

Defenseman Frankie Simonelli

On recognizing that this was a successful homestand:
“I think Monday. Right when we come back to the rink on Monday everyone has to be ready to get better, get ready for the Michigan series. There’s no time to sit there and dwell on a loss tonight. We could have used the points for the standings and the rankings, but we have to move forward and that starts Monday.”
