Mike Gaspard, an award-winning golf professional and alumnus of UW-Madison, has been named general manager of the University Ridge Golf Course, UW Associate Athletic Director John Chadima said Wednesday.
Gaspard is set to begin work in his new position on Jan. 7, 2008.
Our selection committee felt strongly that Mike is the best person to build upon and enhance the overall customer experience at University Ridge, Chadima said. Mike is customer service-oriented and has a strong background in the golf course management industry. He is a great match to lead our efforts at University Ridge.
Gaspard is anxious to return to his home state.
I look forward to coming back to Wisconsin and my alma mater, he said. In this general manager position, I intend to focus on creating a fantastic playing experience for each guest of University Ridge, while building a positive, team atmosphere amongst the staff. The distance between the campus and University Ridge should not be a barrier in providing an excellent UW-Madison approach.
Gaspard has most recently served (since March of 2004) as head golf professional and golf shop manager at the JW Marriott Wildfire Golf Club in Phoenix. Prior to that he spent a year as tournament coordinator at that same facility.
In those roles, Gaspard assisted in budgeting and forecasting for sales of more than $8 million. He was involved in marketing and promotions, as well as sales and leadership initiatives. As tournament coordinator, he contracted, organized and executed 13,000 tournament rounds per year, along with negotiating golf contracts with VIP groups. He achieved a budget in excess of $1.5 million in tournament fees.
Gaspard served as an assistant golf professional at the Westin Kierland Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., from 2000-03. He was responsible for playing a leadership role in the facilitys daily operations and managed golf shop merchandise that produced sales in excess of $1.3 million.
Gaspard was the recipient of the 2006 Acushnet Scholarship. While managing the Wildfire Golf Club, the facility was named Marriott Golf Facility of the Year in 2004. He was nominated in 2002 as Kierland Golf Club Associate of the Year and the Kierland Golf Clubs golf shop was tabbed as a top-100 golf shop in 2001. The Wildfire Golf Club was just named a top-100 golf shop for 2007, as well.
