University Ridge Golf Course was ranked the top collegiate course and one of the top 50 public courses in the nation in the 2009 Golf World Readers Choice Awards announced Oct. 17. Golf World Magazines first ranking of the best public, private and resort facilities in the country used its readers as judges.
University Ridge finished 28th in the public category for all of the countrys courses with a score of 79.96 (of 100). Rankings were determined by a readers poll based on quality of course, condition of course, reputation/prestige, golf practice facilities, speed of play, clubhouse/locker room, golf pro shop, food/dining, off-course activities/amenities, service, and overall value.
The Badgers home course scored eight or better on a 10 point scale in quality of course, condition of course, reputation/prestige, golf pro shop, and off-course activities/amenities. It was the highest ranked college course in the public category ahead of No. 39 UNC-Finley (Chapel Hill, N.C.).
University Ridge was one of just three courses in the state to rank 75.0 or higher along with Blackwolf Run in Kohler and Whistling Straits GC in Haven, Wis. In the resort category, Blackwolf Run ranked 17th with an 87.51, and Whistling Straits was right behind at 18th with a score of 87.42.
According to Golf World, the magazine gathered data over a six-month period evaluating multiple criteria in order to identify the nation's premier facilities. The rankings were comprised of over 21,000 individual golf course ratings and more than 252,000 criteria evaluations.

The 585-acre University Ridge Golf Course opened in 1991. It celebrated its grand reopening this past July. Among the $3.1 million in course improvements were to lengthen the course from its original distance of 6,888 yards to 7,259 yards. Other improvements include a new 33-acre practice facility that will house a short-game practice area for the Badger golf teams; a redesign and expansion of the outdoor practice range and new tee boxes that extend the length of 14 holes.
