DENVER, Colo. -- UW newcomer Jack Watson is tied for 78th after the first round of stroke-play qualifying at the U.S. Amateur Championship held at Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver, Colo. The Lincolnshire, Ill., native fired a 2-over par 73 in the field of 311 golfers in the tournament which runs Aug. 13-19.
Bobby Wyatt of Mobile, Ala., lead the tournament into its second day with a 7-under par 64.
The 2012 U.S. Amateur Championship consists of 36 holes of stroke play followed by six rounds of match play, with the championship scheduled to conclude with a 36-hole final on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. MDT.
Watson also qualified for the 2012 Western Open where he finished 54th with a 6-over par 70-73-78-72--293 at Exmoore Country Club in Highland Park, Ill. The Western and the U.S. Amateur are two of the biggest amateur events in golf.
A transfer from Kent State University, Watson will sit out the 2012-13 season, and have two years of eligibility remaining at Wisconsin.
