Golfers finish in top five at Wisconsin State Amateur

SAUKVILLE, Wis. -- Two Badgers placed among the top five in the 112th Wisconsin State Amateur Championship sponsored at The Bog in Saukville, Wis.

Junior Rob Jacobsen of Racine, Wis., continues his great summer of golf placing third in the 72-hole event with a 2-under par 70-74-70-72--286. Sophomore Matt Ross of Hartland, Wis., was fifth with a 4-over par 73-71-75-73--292.

Jordan Niebrugge, who won the USGA Amateur Public Links Championship at Laurel Hill Golf Club in Lorton, Vir., led wire-to-wire winning by a stroke with a 6-under par 69-66-71-76--282.

Earlier this summer the pair placed fifth at 5-over in the college competition of the 54-hole Magnolia Amateur which finished July 14 at the Hattiesburg Country Club in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Jacobsen completed the individual event tied for 11th at 2-over par 75-72-68--215. Both the 68 and 215 were personnel bests.

Ross tied for 16th with a 3-over 72-75-69--216. The 69 and 216 were career best scores.

Jacobsen played 19 rounds last year and averaged 78.26 per round. Ross played in five rounds and averaged 76.80. Both are expected to contribute this fall when the Badgers begin their season Sept. 21 at Wolf Run Intercollegiate in Zionsville, Ind.
