MADISON, Wis. -- Several golfers with Badger ties qualified for the next step to play in the U.S. Open in an 18-hole qualifier held May 8 at Cherokee Country Club in Madison. The U.S. Open will be played June 14-17 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.
UW assistant men's golf coach, Bryant Odom, won the tournament shooting an even-par 37-32--72. The former Georgia All-American bested a field of 65 on the soggy, 7,266-yard course. His round included flying in for an eagle from 85 yards out on the par 5 No. 11.
Odom said of the experience, "I'm excited to get through to the sectional qualifier for the U.S. Open! I didn't have my best ball striking day but my short game and course management saved me.
"The course was playing tough with breezy conditions and fast greens. I am scheduled to play in the sectional on June 4 at the Village Links of Glen Ellyn near Chicago. Playing in the U.S. Open would be a lifetime experience," Odom concluded.
Also moving on to the sectional in Chicago are former Badgers Patrick Duffy (73) and Garrett Jones (74).
Also participating was junior Thomas Welk who finished tied for fifth with a 2-over par 37-37--74 but lost in the playoff for alternate.
