MADISON, Wis. -- The Badgers will be playing at home for the first time since hosting the Big Ten Golf Championships in 2005 when the 2013 men’s golf fall schedule kicks off.
UW opens the year by returning to the Wolf Run Intercollegiate in Zionsville, Ind., Sept. 21-22, before hosting the Badger Invitational for the first time since 2003. The Badger Invitational held at UW’s home course, University Ridge Golf Course, was a regular event from 2000 to 2003, but the UW men’s golf team has not had a home event since then. The 54-hole Badger Invitational is Sun-Tues., Sept. 29-Oct. 1.
The Badger Invitational held at UW’s home course, University Ridge Golf Course, was a regular event from 2000 to 2003, but the UW men’s golf team has had only two home meets since then. UW hosted the Northern Intercollegiate in October of 2004, as a precursor to hosting the Big Ten Championship in April of 2005 at the Ridge.
Also new this fall is a tournament, the Erin Hills Intercollegiate, hosted by Marquette Oct. 6-8, at the Erin Hills Golf Course in Hartford, Wis. The Badger team will round out the fall, Nov. 3-5, with a return to beautiful Kiawah Island, S.C., for the Wendy’s Kiawah Classic played at the Turtle Point Golf Course and hosted by Charleston Southern. UW placed seventh of 26 teams at the Classic last season.
In addition, several players will gain some experience by competing. Oct. 12-13. as individuals at the Depauw Small College Classic in Clayton, Ind.
Entering his third season, head coach Michael Burcin said, "I am as excited about this fall as any we have had since we came to UW. With our first full recruiting class coming in combined with a home event, I cannot wait to get started. The addition of the Erin Hills event will also add to our strength of schedule with a strong national field coming to the soon-to-be U.S. Open venue (2017). Hosting at University Ridge will allow us to bring a national field to Madison for years to come and spend a week at our home facility.”
Burcin continued, “As I have always believed, to build this program we have to play at very difficult venues against national fields. These four golf courses are all nationally-recognized as top-rated facilities and tests of golf. This will be the building blocks for NCAA appearances and individual successes by our players. We are counting on our guys to be very competitive nationally this summer and come in ready to keep moving forward in the fall.
“We are also going to begin to play a few individual events each year, which will give our young guys some guaranteed events to play in and this will be key to the development of the program," Burcin concluded.
The Badgers begin the spring season, Feb. 7-8, at the fifth annual Big Ten Match Play Championship at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. All 12 Big Ten men's golf teams will be participating in the annual two-day event.
The first round of the event is scheduled for Friday morning, while quarterfinal matches are set for that afternoon. Championship and consolation semifinals will take place on Saturday morning with the first-, third-, fifth- and seventh-place matches following in the afternoon. Each match between the schools will consist of six head-to-head contests.
The 72-hole Big Ten Championships will be held for a third year May 2-4 at the Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort in French Lick, Ind. A year ago, UW wrapped up its season by placing 12th in the Big Ten Championships, but improved by 17 strokes over 2012 with 304-308-304-316—1232.
