MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men's golf team was recognized for the top team cumulative grade point average of the UW men's teams on April 22 at the Buckinghams: Student-Athlete Annual Showcase of Excellence. The fifth annual awards ceremony for UW student-athletes was held at the Overture Center in Madison, Wis.
With its 3.07 cumulative team average, it is the second time in three years the team was honored for the highest GPA of all 11 Badger men's teams, having also earned the distinction in 2011. In 2012, the team was honored with the community service award for performing the most hours of community service of the men's teams.
The women's cross country team was honored with the highest GPA of the women's teams. Other golfers honored were Thomas O'Bryan as an athlete of the year nominee; Zach Balit for community service; Chris Meyer with Chi Alpha Sigma national collegiate honor society; Thomas Welk as an unsung hero and the Athletic Board Scholar with the highest GPA on the golf team.
In addition, the golf team had a representative take part in the performance section of the honors program. Junior John Gullberg from Franklin, Wis., accompanied himself on guitar while singing "Wagon Wheel" by Old Crow Medicine Show.
