MADISON, Wis. -- UW signee Richard Hubbard finished tied for second in the exclusive Carolinas/Georgia Junior Championships held Jan. 20-21 at the Mount Vintage Plantation Golf Club in Edgewood, S.C.
The senior from Daniel Island, S.C., shot a 2-under par 72-70-142 in the event which annually invites the top 20 players from North and South Carolina and Georgia. He is currently ranked No. 53 on the Junior Golf Scoreboard.
Richard has been playing a national junior and amateur schedule for several years. He qualified for the 2012 United States Jr. Amateur Championship after a personal best closing round 64 to win the qualifier with a 9-under par 71-64--135.
He placed ninth with an 8-over par 71-80--151 in the Sea Pines Junior Heritage which annually hosts the world's best players at Harbor Town Golf Links. As a junior all-state player he finished second in the South Carolina state tournament and carried a 35.8 stroke average. Selected Charleston, S.C's The Post and Courier's golfer of the year, he was the medalist in six of 12 high school matches last spring.
Richard will attend UW in the fall and is part of a three-person recruiting class which also includes Ben Skogen of Onalaska, Wis., and Tommy Schofield of Mudelein, Ill.
