Badgers close out fall season with ninth-place finish at Kiawah Classic

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -
The Wisconsin men's golf team closed out the fall season on Tuesday with a strong showing, finishing in ninth place at the 54-hole Wendy's Kiawah Classic in Kiawah Island, S.C.

UW improved one spot to earn its third top-10 finish of the fall season. The Badgers recorded a 38-over par 305-296-301--902 after earning a 13-over par 301 in the final round of play at the Par 72, 7,100-yard Turtle Point Golf Club.

Defending champion South Carolina won its second-straight title, finishing with an impressive even-par 283-286-295--864. Marquette earned second place with a 22-over 292-296-298--886, while Winthrop rounded out the top-three teams with a 23-over par 295-298-294--887.

After surging into the lead in the second round, Marquette's Nick Nelson claimed the individual title with a 6-under par 70-67-73--210. South Carolina’s Matthew NeSmith contributed to the Gamecocks team win with his second-place finish, tallying a 4-under par 75-69-68--212.

Wisconsin had several impressive individual performances to end the fall season. Redshirt senior Robert Jacobsen placed in the top-10 throughout all three rounds and finished tied for ninth place with a 3-over par 72-72-75--219. Jacobsen earned a career 36-hole best with his even-par 144 after round two.

After earning a 36-hole career best score of 146 on Monday, redshirt senior Jack Watson continued his strong play, tying for ninth place along with Jacobsen after tallying a 3-over par  73-73-73--219.

It was Watson's best tournament finish as a Badger and his 54-hole score of 219 shatters his previous career-best score of 225.

Also playing for Wisconsin, freshman Ben Skogen tied for 48th place with a 13-over par 79-75-75--229. Senior Zach Balit finished the day tied for 82nd with a 23-over par 81-76-82--239. Senior John Gullberg rounded out UW’s scoring roster a 30-over par 82-86-78--246 to tie for 93rd.

The Badgers return to competition on Feb. 7-8 for their 2014 spring season opener. Wisconsin will travel to Bradenton, Fla. for Big Ten Match Play at The Concession Golf Course.
