MADISON, Wis.
– South Carolina led wire-to-wire to win the 14-team Badger Men’s Golf Invitational Tuesday at the par 72, 7.259-yard University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wis. The Gamecocks claimed the first two individual spots and the team shot an 8-under 282-283-291--856, which ranked fifth on the Badger Invitational 54-hole team marks.

The teams played under sunny skies with temperatures in the 80s and winds gusting to 20 mph.

USC’s Caleb Sturgeon set the Badger Invitational 54-hole record with a 10-under par 65-72-69--206. That score ranks third among University Ridge marks. Teammate Matthew NeSmith was second with a 4-under par 72-67-73--212.

Wisconsin’s Robert Jacobsen tied for third and turned in the best 18-hole score of the day with a career-best 68 to record a personal best 1-under par 74-73-68--215. Illinois State’s Jordan Fahel also tied for third with 71-74-70--215. There were only four individuals under par for the tournament.

The host Badgers placed 11th with a 36-over par 295-307-298--900. This was the first home event for the Badgers since hosting the Big Ten Conference Championship in 2005, and the first men’s collegiate event since the course was lengthened in 2011.

Playing in his first tournament for the Badgers, transfer Jack Watson placed second for UW, finishing tied for 29th place with a 9-over par 72-75-78—225. Freshman Ben Skogen tied for 41st place behind a career best 11-over par 75-78-74--227. Skogen’s third round score of 74 is an 18-hole personal best.

Senior Zach Balit recorded a fourth-place finish for the Badgers, earning 59th place overall with a 17-over par 74-81-78--233. Senior John Gullberg rounded out Wisconsin’s top five, scoring a 25-over par 80-81-80--241.

Competing as individuals, UW sophomore Matt Ross tied for 10th place with a 54-hole career best 4-over par 72-71-77--220, while freshman Tommy Schofield tied for 22nd in his first collegiate tournament with a 7-over par 76-72-75--223.

Junior Thomas O’Bryan also competed as an individual, placing 60th with an 18-over par 72-80-82--234.
