Badgers tied for 10th place at Big Ten championships after day two

FRENCH LICK, Ind. – The Wisconsin men’s golf team continued play at the 2014 Big Ten Men’s Golf Championships on Saturday in French Lick, Ind., staying in 10th place after round three of the 72-hole tournament.

UW recorded a 24-over par 312 on day two of the conference tournament held on the 7,152-yard, par-72 Pete Dye Course at the French Lick Resort. The Badgers are in 10th place after tallying a 61-over par 311-302-312--925 through 54 holes.

“Overall we can move up tomorrow and have one of the better finishes the program has had in awhile,” UW head coach Michael Burcin said. “The guys are excited to compete tomorrow."

Minnesota leads the 12-team field with 132-over par 295-300-301--896. Illinois (297-298-308) and Purdue (298-296-309) are tied for second place after tallying a 39-over par 903. Northwestern is in fourth place with 43-over par 301-301-305--907 and Ohio State caps off the top-five teams in fifth place with 45-over par 302-294-313--909.

The Gophers’ Jose Mendez leads the 60-player field with his even-par 69-74-73--216, while Illinois’ Charlie Danielson is in second place with 3-over par 71-76-72--219. Northwestern’s Jack Perry rounds out the top-three individuals with 5-over par 73-75-73--221.

After ending day one tied for 22nd, UW junior Thomas O’Bryan used a strong third-round performance of 2-over par 74 to move up the leaderboard to tie for 12th place with 10-over par 76-76-74--226.

Two other Badgers closed out day two in the top-30. Redshirt senior Jack Watson is tied for 20th with a 13-over par 78-71-80--229 and redshirt senior Zach Balit is tied for 29th with 15-over par 78-77-76--231.

"Really proud of Thomas and his event so far,” Burcin said. “Zach and Jack still have a nice finish in the reach with a solid day tomorrow.”

Also for Wisconsin, redshirt senior Robert Jacobsen is tied for 55th after tallying 29-over par 79-81-85--245. Freshman Ben Skogen is competing in his first conference tournament and is tied for 56th with 30-over par 86-78-82--246.

The Badgers wrap up play at the Big Ten championships on Sunday with the final 18 holes of the tournament starting at 7 a.m. CT.
