TAMPA BAY, Fla. - The Wisconsin men’s golf team closed out its first stroke play tournament of the spring season on Tuesday, finishing in 17th place and tallying a season-best 54-hole score of 882 at the USF Invitational in Tampa Bay, Florida.

After recording a season-best 18-hole score of 288 to open the tournament and a season-low 36-hole score of 587 after round two, the Badgers continued their best play of the 2013-14 season on the par 72, 7,060-yard Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club course. UW shot a 7-over par 295 in the final round of play to finish with a season-low 54-hole score of 18-over par 288-299-295--882.

Wisconsin’s previous season-best 54-hole score was 898, which was set back on October 6-8 at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate in Hartford, Wis.

Florida State surpassed host South Florida after the final 18 holes to claim the team championship. The Seminoles tallied an impressive 24-under par 264 in round three and finished 41-under par with 275-284-264--823.

South Florida placed second with a 31-under par 281-269-283--833, while UNCG rounded out the top-three with a 26-under par 275-290-273--838. In total, 12 teams out of the 17-team field finished under par.

Individually, Florida State’s Jack Maguire won the title after shooting a 10-under par 62 in round three. Maguire recorded a 16-under par 65-73-62--200 overall, edging out Illinois’ Brian Campbell and Purdue’s Adam Schenk. Campbell (64-67-70) and Schenk (65-70-66) tied for second place with 15-under par 201.

Leading the way for Wisconsin was redshirt senior Zach Balit, who tied for 37th in the 88-player field with a 1-under par 68-74-73--215. Balit’s score of 215 is a new 54-hole career best, breaking his previous best of 222 set in the fall at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate.

Senior Robert Jacobsen tied for 55th with a 3-over par 70-76-73--219, while redshirt senior Jack Watson tied for 61st with a 4-over par 71-75-74--220. Sophomore Matt Ross tied for 83rd with a 12-over par 79-74-75--228 and senior John Gullberg rounded out UW’s scoring tied for 86th with a 19-over par 80-78-77--235.

Up next, Wisconsin travels to the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C., on March 16-17 for the Seahawk Intercollegiate.
