Badgers tee off play at 2014 Big Ten Match Play Tournament

BRANDENTON, Fla.
– The Wisconsin men’s golf team teed off the Big Ten Match Play Tournament in Brandenton, Fla., at The Concession Golf Club on Friday, falling to Indiana in the opening round 4-1, and then rebounding to a 4-1 win against Nebraska in the consolation bracket on Friday afternoon.

The Badgers opened up play Friday morning against Indiana. Senior Robert Jacobsen, redshirt senior Jack Watson, freshman Richard Hubbard, junior Thomas O'Bryan and redshirt senior Zach Balit competed for UW. Balit was the sole Badger recording a win in the opening round, defeating Indiana’s Keegan Vea 2 & 1.

Jacobsen fell to IU’s David Mills 3 & 2, while Watson was defeated by Max Kollin’s 4 & 3.

O’Bryan dropped his match to Nicholas Grubnich 3 & 1 and in his Badger collegiate debut, Hubbard lost to Will Seger 4 & 3.

On Friday afternoon, UW faced Nebraska in the consolation round.  The Badgers recorded a 4-1 win against the Huskers. Watson topped Nebraska’s Calvin Freeman 5 & 4, while both Balit (vs. Matt Record) and O’Bryan (vs. Justin Jennings) finished 1-Up.

Hubbard recorded a 3 & 1 victory over Mike Siwa, while Jacobsen fell to Ross Dickson 1-Up.

In first-round action, eighth-seeded Michigan defeated ninth-seed Michigan State 3-2. No. 7 seed Minnesota topped 10th-seeded Penn State 4-1. Fifth-seeded Ohio State played to a 3-2 over 12th-seeded Nebraska.

Based on their final Golfstat rankings at the end of the fall season, Iowa, Northwestern, Illinois and Purdue had earned top-four seeds and first-round byes in the tournament. In quarterfinals play, the top-seeded Illini suffered a quarterfinal loss to Michigan, losing 3-2.

No. 2 seed Purdue earned a 4-0-1 victory over Minnesota, third-seeded Northwestern defeated Indiana 4-1 and Iowa won against Ohio State 2-2-1.

Championship play continues on Saturday with Iowa playing Michigan and Purdue competing against Northwestern.

Thanks to Wisconsin’s victory over Nebraska in the first round of consolation action, the Badgers advanced to round two of consolation bracket. The Badgers will go head-to-head with Michigan State when play begins at 7:50 a.m. CT. on Saturday.
