Madison, Wis. - The UW Athletic Department in conjunction with Oscar Mayer is pleased to announce Phil and Joy Buteyn of Beaver Dam as today's Wisconsin football season ticket holders of the game.
Growing up in Beaver Dam, the first sporting event Phil ever watched on television was the 1953 Rose Bowl between Wisconsin and USC. Even though the Badgers dropped a 7-0 decision to the Trojans that day, Phil became intrigued by Badger football.
He finally made it to Camp Randall Stadium in 1960 to watch Wisconsin face Northwestern. The Wildcats won that day, but Phil became hooked for life. In spite of the loss he fell in love with the entire event and was filled with pride as the team represented the University and the State.
By the late 1960s Phil was attending games on a regular basis with his now wife Joy until they secured their own season tickets in 1979. In that time they have enjoyed many games including the 1981 win over top-ranked Michigan, the "Dayne Game" against Iowa is 1999, and perhaps their favorite, the 1994 Rose Bowl win over UCLA.
Phil and Joy, who now attend games with their son and daughter-in-law, always check-out the band's pre-game performance at the Badger Bash. Phil and his family love the evolving traditions surrounding Badger football including the older traditions no longer a part of the experience like the Portage Plumber and the Bucky Wagon. Today Phil and Joy love the feeling they get with the band marches in, the opening video and the team walking through the tunnel to the field as well as the band and cheerleaders performing around the entire stadium.
As part of being named the season ticket holders of the game, Phil and Joy will receive a reserved parking space and tailgate spread courtesy of Oscar Mayer. In addition they will be recognized on the field during today's game against Indiana.
The UW Athletic Department is pleased to join Oscar Mayer in saluting Phil and Joy Buteyn as this week's season ticket holders of the game.
