MADISON, Wis. -- The game many months in the making is finally official. The Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Athletic Department announced Friday that the UW football team will open the 2016 season at Lambeau Field against LSU. The game will take place on Sept. 3.
“I’m very excited about this game and I hope our fans are, too,” Wisconsin Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez said. “We have a great working relationship with the Packers and Mark Murphy and I want to thank them for all their help in getting this game scheduled. It is a tremendous opportunity to showcase our program, a great experience for our players to play in one of the most revered stadiums in the country and a terrific chance for our fans to see us play a quality opponent in the state of Wisconsin.”
“We’re honored to be able to host two storied college football programs at Lambeau Field,” said Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy. “It will be an exciting weekend for football fans at our historic stadium. The Green Bay community will serve as an excellent host and we all look forward to seeing fans from both teams that weekend.
“I’d especially like to thank Barry Alvarez and Joe Alleva. It’s been a pleasure to reconnect with them to put this game together.”
The 2016 game will mark the third-straight season UW will open against an SEC opponent. The Badgers and Tigers will also meet to kick off next season, on Aug. 30, 2014 at Reliant Stadium in Houston. In 2015, Wisconsin will face Alabama at AT&T Stadium (formerly Cowboys Stadium) in Arlington, Texas on Sept. 5.
In addition to the game vs. LSU at Lambeau, Wisconsin has completed its 2016 schedule with home games against Akron and Georgia State. 2016 marks the first season of the nine-game Big Ten schedule. The conference slate includes home games against Ohio State, Nebraska, Illinois and Minnesota and road contents at Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa, Northwestern and Purdue.
