MADISON, Wis.--When practice is over and school work is finished, Shelton Johnson's real work begins. During the 2011-12 school year, Johnson logged the most community service hours of any Wisconsin football player, spending time in elementary schools, hospitals and reading to children.
For his efforts, Johnson has been named one of 117 nominees for the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®. The award recognizes a select group of college football players committed to making a difference in their communities.
Last season, Johnson volunteered his free time mentoring at Spring Harbor Elementary School, reading to fourth graders at Thoreau Elementary School and as a celebrity waiter at the St. Jude Children's Hospital Benefit. He volunteered at UW's Dance Marathon, represented the team at the state capital and visited the Los Angeles Children's Hospital as a member of a voluntary Rose Bowl event.
A two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, Johnson is entering his second season as a starter in 2012. He has played in 35 career games with 13 starts and recorded 69 tackles --including 54 in 2011-- in his three years with the Badgers.
A senior defensive back from Carrollton, Texas, Johnson earned his third letter in 2011 after playing in 13 games with 12 starts. He finished the season second in the Big Ten with four interceptions and tied a career high with eight tackles, an interception and a broken up pass against Michigan State in the Big Ten Championship Game.
Two 11-player Good Works Teams®-- one comprised of players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and another representing players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III, and the NAIA-- will be unveiled in September. Johnson looks to join former Badgers Cecil Martin (1997, 98), Brooks Bollinger (2001) and Chris Maragos (2009) as a member of the Good Works Team®.
