University of Wisconsin football coach Bret Bielema believes the Big Ten Conference's new divisional alignment will help the Badgers in recruiting.

University of Wisconsin football coach Bret Bielema handed out scholarships to three walk-ons this week: sophomore backup offensive tackle Ricky Wagner, junior long snapper Kyle Wojta and junior tight end Rob Korslin.
  • Madison.com: Three walk-ons earn scholarships

Mike Taylor isn't sure whether he will be healthy enough to play Saturday night when No. 12 Wisconsin opens the season at Nevada-Las Vegas. The sophomore linebacker insisted, however, that he plans to play no later than Week 2 when UW hosts San Jose State, writes Jeff Potrykus in this notes column.
  • JSOnline.com: Badgers' Taylor is nearly back
  • Madison.com: Taylor will travel to UNLV, but unlikely to play

James White was the biggest story to come out of UW's preseason camp, a freshman so precocious, talented and fast -- he has run the 40-yard dash in 4.43 seconds -- he has secured a spot not only in the backfield but as a potential returner.

Like all newcomers, Jared Abbrederis is hoping to make a name for himself. Not that many can spell or pronounce his name (ab-bre-DARE-us). But he figures that will come in time. Saturday night in Las Vegas would be a good starting point.

One of the perks of being a college football coach is seeing teenagers develop as players, mature into young adults and bond with their teammates in ways fans sometimes can't see. The most recent meeting between Wisconsin and UNLV was like so many between the teams. It's a cross-sectional rivalry between programs with little in common, yet one that has produced unforgettable moments.

The Badgers are a top-tier team in the strong Big Ten Conference, and plenty of the buzz surrounding them heading into 2010 stems from a 20-14 victory over Miami in last year's Champs Sports Bowl -- a game which was not as close as the score indicates.
  • LasVegasSun.com: Take Five: Getting to know Wisconsin

UNLV officials are encouraged by the growing ticket sales for Saturday's 8 p.m. season opener against No. 12 Wisconsin at Sam Boyd Stadium, and still hold out hope for an outside shot at a sellout.
