EL PASO, Texas -- A furious second-half comeback — including big plays on special teams, a turnover from the defense and a balanced offense — contributed to Wisconsin’s 21-20 victory over UCLA in the 2000 Sun Bowl.
After falling behind 20-7 with a little more than one-and-a-half quarters left, Michael Bennett turned the momentum with a 54-yard kickoff return. Brooks Bollinger’s three-yard TD pass to Chris Chambers brought the Badgers to within 20-14.
On UCLA’s next drive, Ben Herbert made a key fourth-down stop on a fake field goal by the Bruins. The Badgers took over on their own 30-yard line and drove for the tying score, a six-yard run by Bennett. Vitaly Pisetsky’s conversion was the winning point. The game was far from over.
UCLA had three more possessions, but the Badgers held each time and wrapped up the victory with Jamar Fletcher’s interception in the final minute. Bennett was named Special Teams MVP, while UCLA’s Freddie Mitchell (9-180) was the game MVP.
Besides Bennett’s TD run and Chambers’ scoring catch, the Badgers got their other points from Lee Evans (54-yard catch). It was the Badgers’ third bowl win over UCLA since 1994.
